Büyükçay Dam is located on Büyükçay river within Fırat basin in Malatya. The project is for irrigation and energy purposes.
The project is designed at 1126.50 m thalweg elevation of Büyükçay Stream, in Pötürge district of Malatya province of Turkey. The Demir Weir, which will be constructed for the derivation of the waters of Alireş (Muzik) stream, is located in west of the Dam, and elevated at 1210.00 thalveg level of the Muzik stream. Büyükçay Dam is designed as asphalt core rockfill type with a height of 80.0 m from the thalweg and 83.50 m from the foundation and active resorvoir volume is 95.98 hm3.
Büyükçay Dam has 9764 ha gross irrigation area and net 8787 ha.
