The purpose of the project is to provide dry working environment for enabling a large open-pit excavation on the river bed. Upstream & downstream cofferdams with deep slurry trenches down to 46m in the alluvium assures stability of the clay cored (zoned) rockfill embankments. A 70m wide uncontrolled spillway has a discharge capacity of 10,000-Year Flood, together with the diversion tunnels.
